Part 4 - The Name Says It All
“Hi, I own John’s Fantastic Gizmo Company, and I want a Web site. I want the name of the Web site to be johnsfantasticgizmocompany.com. When can we get started?”
A domain name is a lot like the first line of an advertisement, it needs to grab attention. Do you think that a name like johnsfantasticgizmocompany.com grabs attention? Personally, I would say “it depends.” If this company were world-famous, then it’s a great name. 99% of all companies are not world-famous, though.
Let’s say that John’s gizmos are the better toothbrush. A good domain name could be as simple as toothbrush.com (it’s already taken), or fantastictoothbrush.com, or whiteteeth.com, and on. The domain name should be more about what your product or service is than what your company name is, but you don’t have to limit it to one name either. Confused yet?
Remember, the object is to get noticed. We all want our business names to be known, but it’s much more important for the client to know what we do or what we have than who we are. |
Example: Intra-Designs is a Web Design company based in Washington state. The company is interested in marketing to the local economy, so it has domain names like:
www.washingtonwebsites.com
These names both forward to www.intra-designs.com, but the name is great for marketing in the search engines. Some search engines don't list names that forward anymore, so creating "marketing domains" is a viable option. If you look at www.puyallupwebdesign.com, the site is a marketing site for Intra-Designs. There are maybe 2 or 3 unique pages, and the rest of the site points right back to Intra-Designs.
Most smaller companies haven’t grasped this yet, and it’s very important to understand the object. Think of your Web site as an advertisement in the newspaper. Are you going to fill the entire ad with your business name? Will that bring in more customers? Would you go to a store like that if you saw their ad?
Play with different types of names, and remember that you can choose more than one name. You’re not out much money when you can get domain names for under $10 per year at www.tacomawebhosting.info.
