Part 2 - What is SEO?
The computer industry didn’t create acronyms, but it sure took over the market! |
SEO… No, it’s not sew spelled wrong, it’s a computer (or, to be more precise, a web) acronym standing for Search Engine Optimization. As I tell my clients, it doesn’t matter if you have the best Web site in the world if nobody can find it. Search Engine Optimization is the process in which your web site is designed or modified to conform to the standards search engines set for indexing Web sites. That’s a pretty long way of saying it’s the way to get your site ranked higher in Google and Yahoo.
SEO is NOT a relative science. We can track exactly how well it’s doing. |
Some Web designers are saying that SEO is dead, or that keywords are no longer needed. That’s the same thing as saying it’s useless to advertise in the newspaper anymore. We know that it’s difficult to gauge exactly how well newspaper advertising does, but we also know that business goes up when we do advertise. Unlike traditional advertising, however, we can tell exactly what proper SEO achieves by studying statistics.
“Early in 1995, the BBS (Bulletin Borad System) was still king. Compuserve, Prodigy, AOL—these were the powerhouses. Most of computer-buying America knew little, if anything, about the Internet. Bill Gates even stated flatly at a press conference that the Internet was a passing fad and unimportant. He said this at the announcement for its new BBS, Microsoft Network (MSN).” |
We are still in the infancy of the Internet, or, to think of it another way, the “Model T” of the Internet. Have you seen a Model T automobile? Compare that to the Hummer H3. Quite a bit of a difference, isn’t it? Those same differences can be compared to the Internet. There was not such thing as a World Wide Web in 1991, when I first got onto the Internet. There was a consortium of educators that exchanged information, and a lot of dial-up bulleting boards (a lot meaning about 50 in an area of 6 million people). Microsoft Windows 3.1 was just entering the market, with over a millions lines of buggy code. DOS was king, and computer people hated the mouse. What are computers like today? What will they be like in 15 years? The World Wide Web started getting noticed about 1994, but it was considered to be a passing fancy by the Bulletin Board kings. In 1995, however, when Clinton and Gore started talking about it, suddenly everyone wanted on.
There are many steps to optimizing a Web site, and the process doesn’t stop after the first try. This E-book will show you exactly how to optimize your site, and, if you follow it closely, you can keep your Web site in the “Top 10” for certain keywords.
