Page 5 - Picking The Right Type Of Program
There are three basic types of programs, and each has certain advantages and disadvantages:
Pay-Per-Click
Pay-Per-Lead
Pay-Per-Sale
Let’s look at each of these:
Pay Per Click Programs
We have all participated in Pay Per Click (PPC) programs. I’ve gone to Web sites before and seen the (RARE) banner on the top of the page that actually interests me, so I click on it. That’s all it takes to get paid from a Pay Per Click program. Google AdSense is our #1 pick for PPC programs.
.
Some Pay Per Click programs have advanced with the new research though, and offer text links as well as banners.
Pay Per Lead Programs
Pay Per Lead programs require a bit more than Pay Per Click. In order to get the commission, the person referred from your site needs to do something; like fill out a form, request more information, or give the company ways to contact them.
Pay Per Sale
Pay per sale is generally the most difficult way to earn money in the affiliate game, but it can also be the most rewarding. The most famous Pay Per Sale program (that I know of) is Amazon.com. Their affiliate program can bring in a lot of money (as of writing this, Amazon.com is our #1 pick for a pay-per-sale affiliate program.).
The main difference in the three types of programs are:
- The number of paying referrals, and
- The amount of money per referral
Pay Per Click (PPC) programs generally result in a large number of referrals. For instance, in an average month, I get paid on about 1000 clicks through Google’s affiliate program (
). That sounds like a lot until you realize that I only get about 25 cents per click (25 cents is a LOT in the PPC game!).

- PPC Advantage: Revenue is generated whenever someone clicks on a link, whether the person buys something or not.
- PPC Disadvantage: Revenue is in pennies per click.
- Recommendation: Put PPC programs on larger, generic sites that generate a lot of traffic.
Pay Per Lead (PPL) programs generate far fewer referrals, but you can get up to $20 per lead. One good lead may be worth 100 clicks on a banner. Pay per lead programs are quite often easier to sell because you can choose lead programs that follow the theme of your site.
- PPL Advantage: Higher payouts than PPC
- PPL Disadvantage: People have to fill out a form or give other personal contact information in order for you to get paid.
- Recommendation: Put PPL programs on sites that discuss more service-related business.
Pay Per Sale (PPS) programs generate the least number of referrals, but may offer the best rewards. A 15% commission on a $200 piece of artwork ($30) is worth 120 clicks on a Pay Per Click program. (You will be in 7th Heaven if you can sell 10 of these a month.)
- PPS Advantage: Here be the big bucks!
- PPS Disadvantage: People have to actually purchase the product for you to get paid.
- Recommendation: Put PPS programs on “how to” or informational sites where you are writing about products.
You can make a lot of money no matter which type of program is being used, but visitors to your site have to do something in order for you to get paid. They have to click a link that leaves your site, fill out a form, or buy something. Make sure that the advertising is complimentary to what your site is about, I can’t stress that enough.
